    A.  DURING A DAILY INSPECTION, THE NUMBER TWO (RH) SIDE 
 
ENGINE-COMBINER CROSS SHAFT STEEL ADAPTER LUG ON THE COMBINER END 
 
WAS FOUND CRACKED.  INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE CRACK WAS 
 
INITIATED FROM FRETTING IN THE BORE OF A BOLT HOLE.  THE FRETTING IS 
 
ATTRIBUTED TO A LOOSE BOLT BETWEEN THE THOMAS COUPLINGS AND THE 
 
ADAPTER.
 
    B.  THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE IS TO:
 
         (1)  REQUIRE A ONE TIME INSPECTION OF ALL INBOARD/OUTBOARD 
 
CROSS SHAFT ADAPTERS FOR CRACKS AND TO REQUIRE A CHECK OF NUT 
 
TORQUE.
 
         (2)  REQUIRE A RECURRING 25 HOUR INSPECTION TO VISUALLY 
 
INSPECT THE OUTBOARD DRIVE SHAFT LUGS AND ADAPTER LUGS.

    PERFORM ONLY THE VISUAL 4X MAGNIFYING GLASS INSPECTION.
 
    B.  VISUALLY INSPECT, USING A 4X POWER MAGNIFYING GLASS, THE 
 
INBOARD AND OUTBOARD ADAPTER AND DRIVE SHAFT NUTS OF BOTH THE NO. 1 
 
AND THE NO. 2 ENGINE DRIVE SHAFTS.  IF CRACKS ARE SUSPECTED, REMOVE 
 
AND PERFORM FLUORESCENT PENETRANT INSPECTION.
 
    C.  PERFORM A TORQUE CHECK (IN TIGHTENING DIRECTION ONLY) OF ALL 
 
THE ENGINE DRIVE SHAFT NUTS (6 EACH, 4 PLACES).  HOLD HEAD OF BOLT 
 
STATIONARY WHILE PERFORMING TORQUE CHECK.  IF NUT MOVED INDICATING 
 
THE TORQUE IS LESS THAN 330 INCH POUNDS, MARK THAT NUT WITH A GREASE 
 
PENCIL AND CONTINUE TO CHECK REMAINING NUTS.  SEE CORRECTIVE ACTION.  
 
IF THE NUT DID NOT MOVE, TORQUE NUT TO 440 INCH-POUNDS AND PROCEED 
 
TO NEXT NUT.  CONTINUE TO CHECK EACH NUT AS DESCRIBED.

THE ADAPTER ASSEMBLY IS A BALANCED ASSEMBLY.  AT ALL TIMES A MINIMUM 
 
OF TWO BOLTS SHALL ATTACH THE THOMAS COUPLING PLATES TO THE ADAPTER 
 
WITH THE PROPER TORQUE.  REMOVING MORE THAN ONE BOLT AT A TIME SHALL 
 
BE CAUSE FOR REMOVAL TO REBALANCE THE ADAPTER ASSEMBLY.
 
    A.  IF A CRACK IS SUSPECTED OR NUTS TURNED DURING THE 330 INCH 
 
POUND TORQUE CHECK, REMOVE SUSPECT ADAPTER.  REMOVE THE BOLT ON THE 
 
AFFECTED ADAPTER LUG AND PERFORM FLUORESCENT PENETRANT INSPECTION OF 
 
THAT AREA.  PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION AND VISUALLY INSPECT FOR SIGNS 
 
OF FRETTING AROUND BOLTS AND BOLT HOLES.  IF NO CRACKS OR FRETTING 
 
ARE VISIBLE REPLACE BOLTS AND REINSTALL DRIVE SHAFT.     
 
    B.  IF CRACKED, OR FRETTING IS VISIBLE, REPLACE DEFECTIVE PARTS
