12 MH-47D helicopters were produced. 6 were conversions from CH-47A models and 6 were conversions from CH-47C models. All aircraft were assigned to elements of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) - "Nightstalkers", located at either Fort Campbell, Kentucky, or Hunter Army Airfield, near Savannah, Georgia.

Unfortunately, little is known about the aircraft and it's disposition, due to the sensitive nature of the unit and the missions performed.

As of December 2002, eleven MH-47D model airframes were in service to the United States Army.
