8 January 2004: A United States operated C-130 - " Hercules" cargo plane lands as a U.S. Army CH-47D Chinook helicopter flys overhead at Baghdad International Airport. Earlier, a U.S. Air Force C-5 - "Galaxy" cargo plane, carrying 63 personnel, declared an in-flight emergency shortly after taking off from Baghdad. Unconfirmed reports indicate the aircraft was fired upon by a surface to air missile (SAM) and deployed flares to counter the threat. Even though the reported missile apparently struck the number four engine, the aircrew of the C-5 was able to return to Baghdad and safely land the aircraft.
